An ‘outsider’ perspective can be motivating

earning to play the violin? Preparing a big speech? Need some extra motivation? Try an out-of-body experience. Seriously, says psychologist Noelia Vasquez of York University in Canada. It will give you a “big picture” view that her studies have found to be more motivating.

Here’s how it works.

Say you’re giving a concert (or an inaugural address). Instead of visualizing the audience through your eyes, imagine how they will see you.

This allows you to appreciate the larger context of the event and its more abstract meaning, says Vasquez. It’s a strong motivator to refine your strategy and open lines of communication.
