eing
seriously overweight can increase one’s odds of getting arthritis
by 60 percent, according to a new study published in the Canadian
journal Health Reports.“Obesity leads to arthritis,
rather than the reverse, by increasing stress on the joints,”
says researcher Kathryn Wilkins. Based on 4,787 participants ages
40 and older, the study found that being overweight, but not to
the point of obesity, also increases the risk of arthritis—among
women even more than men. It suggests that controlling body weight
offers the best potential for preventing arthritis.
